GHAZAL II

For Them

Un Ke Liye

This ghazal was born inside Ghazal I and then set free. Among the first poem’s questions was one that didn’t belong to the son’s grief: no one will ever look at or spoil my daughters the way only a grandfather can. That thought deserved its own poem, so the daughters sher was lifted out and this ghazal grew around it.

At its heart is a paradox: Nadine and Natasha cannot grieve their grandfather, because grief needs memory and they have almost none. The cruelest part of their loss is that they cannot experience it as loss. So their father mourns on their behalf: grief by proxy, an inherited absence they will never feel. Hence the radif. Everything in this poem is done, kept, wept, and swept for them.

It is also, quietly, a poem about what did get through. The grief skipped them; the laughter didn’t.

  1. All the love you never got to spend, I know you kept for them.
Even in my dreams, where you still visit, you have wept for them.

The love you could not give, you hid away in your heart for them. Even coming into my dreams, you shed tears for them.

jehṛā pyār tusīṅ de nā sake, dil ch lukāyā, unhāṅ laī
khwābāṅ ch ā ke vī tusīṅ hanjū vahāyā, unhāṅ laī

The love you couldn't give, you hid it in your heart, for them; even coming into my dreams, you shed tears, for them.

  2. No sweets past eight, no staying up: my rules. You would have laughed;
every law I ever made, you'd have overstepped for them.

No sweets at night, no staying up: those were my laws. Every command of mine you laughed away for them.

rāt nu nā miṭhāī, nā jāgṇā: ih mere kānūn san
mérā har hukam tusīṅ hass ke uḍāyā, unhāṅ laī

No sweets at night, no staying up: these were my laws; every order of mine you laughed off, for them.

  3. The cruelest mercy: they will never know what's missing,
a grief they cannot carry, one I have accepted for them.

Ye kaisi meharbani: unhein khabar hi nahin kya khoya

What strange mercy: they do not even know what was lost. The grief they cannot carry, I have carried for them.

kehī meharbānī: unhāṅ nu patā hī nai kī khoyā
jehṛā gham oh chuk nī sakde, oh maiṅ uṭhāyā, unhāṅ laī

What mercy is this: they don't even know what's lost; the grief they can't lift, I lifted it, for them.

  4. I start your stories; now they finish them for me.
Look, your laughter skipped a generation, leapt for them.

Kahaniyan aap ki main shuru karoon, wo poori karti hain

I begin your stories; they finish them. Your laughter leapt over me and made its home in them.

tuhāḍīāṅ kahāṇīāṅ maiṅ shurū karāṅ, oh mukāuṇ
tuhāḍe hāse ne mainu ṭapp, ghar vasāyā, unhāṅ laī

Your stories I start, they finish them; your laughter leapt clean over me and set up house in them, for them.

  5. You dreamt they'd soar up fearless, with no world upon their wings;
the runway to that open sky, your lifetime swept for them.

Ye khwab tha aap ka: khule falak mein be-khauf udein wo
aap ne to umr bhar ka raasta bichhaya un ke liye

This was your dream: that they fly fearless in the open sky. You laid down a lifetime as the road for them.

ih tuhāḍā khwāb si: khulle asmān ch beḍar uḍan oh
tusīṅ sārī umar dā rāh vichhāyā, unhāṅ laī

This was your dream: that they fly fearless in the open sky; you laid your whole life down as their road, for them.

  6. Imran, inherit this: the vigils, the watching-over.
Keep now all the sleepless nights he never slept for them.

Imran, wirasat ye teri: pehre, nigehbani
un ki har ik be-khwab shab ka chiragh jalaya un ke liye

Imran, this is your inheritance: the vigils, the watching-over. For every sleepless night of his, you have lit a lamp for them.

Imrānā, ih térā wirsā: pehre te rākhī
unhāṅ dī har jaagī rāt dā dīvā jagāyā, unhāṅ laī

Imran, this is your inheritance: the watches and the guarding; for every waking night of his, you kindled a lamp, for them.
