Rashid Mughal in a flat cap and glasses, smiling broadly on a city street beside a bicycle decorated with ribbons and tassels

The world is a beautiful place, if only you open your eyes and care to look. That was his teaching, and he never once charged tuition for it. He taught me to look at the stars. He taught me to appreciate the sunrise and the sunset alike; no hour of the sky was beneath his notice. He would notice birds high up in the sky, so high the rest of us had walked past them, and he would stop and point. He used to say that it costs nothing to appreciate beauty.

This ghazal takes him at his word and holds it up against the world’s arithmetic. Everything else is priced, metered, rationed, invoiced. His inheritance was the one wealth that arrives without a bill and cannot be repossessed: the lifted eye. The radif is the receipt stamped on every sher: for free. It should sound almost like a market cry, except the merchandise is the heavens, and the merchant never asked for a single coin.

  1. He showed me the stars keep their court in the sky, for free;
    admission was only the lift of an eye, for free.
